Scientific and technological developments, heated public debates about opportunities and risks, or the changing explosiveness of individual topics continue to shape the controversial debates about the various applications of genetic engineering in Germany.
With the „Second Gene Technology Report“, the Interdisciplinary Research Group of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) of the same name is once again presenting its comprehensive monitoring of current developments in the field of genetic engineering, four years after the publication of its first report.
In a proven interdisciplinary manner, the current state of science and technology in the various fields of genetic engineering is analyzed. The indicator-based approach established for this purpose in recent years is being consistently continued. Four topics are considered in overview articles: research on human pluripotent stem cells, molecular genetic diagnostics in human medicine, somatic gene therapy, and the use of gene technology in plant breeding and agriculture. Two cross-cutting topics, a general presentation of current scientific and technical developments in basic research and the presentation of an overarching ethical category system for genetic engineering applications complete the report.
